Project controls
What monitoring actually produces.
Reporting only earns its cost if it changes a decision. These are the instruments we use and what each one is for.
- Work breakdown structure
- Decomposes scope into measurable packages, so progress can be claimed against something specific rather than estimated as a percentage.
- Baseline programme
- Establishes the sequence and the critical path. Every later delay claim is measured against this, which is why it is worth getting right before mobilisation.
- Look-ahead schedule
- A short-horizon view — typically three to six weeks — used to confirm that resources, approvals and materials are in place for imminent activities.
- Progress measurement
- Physical progress verified on site against the work breakdown, reconciled with financial progress and billing.
- Exception report
- Raised when an activity deviates materially from baseline. Names the cause, the programme impact and the options, rather than only the variance.
- Risk and issue register
- Live record of what could go wrong and what already has, with an owner and a review date against each entry.
